Joshi, definisce infatti la sua opera come "un inclassificabile amalgama di fantasy e fantascienza, e non è sorprendente che abbia influenzato in maniera considerevole lo sviluppo successivo di entrambi i generi". Dal punto di vista del pensiero nei suoi racconti e saggi coniò la filosofia del cosmicismo, in conseguenza del suo ateismo e delle nuove scoperte scientifiche, e le sue idee in molti campi furono spesso controverse.
