From 77.99 kr. In a new audio adaptation of some of Austen’s lesser known works, Avita Jay brings to life the wit and satire of one of England’s greatest authors. In Austen’s final and unfinished novel, Charlotte Heywood finds herself caught up in the comings and goings of the lively seaside resort "Sanditon". It is a story filled with a cast of colourful characters, from the widowed Lady Denham to wealthy Caribbean heiress, Georgiana Lambe, and the dashing, Sidney Parker. Naturally, romance and scandal ensue. The incomplete story has inspired many writers to take the work into their own hands, including the popular adaptation by the ITV, starring Theo James. "Lady Susan" is an epistolary novel that follows the charming, irreverent, newly widowed Lady Susan. Beautiful, flirtatious and utterly, unashamed, she goes about seducing a married man, terrorizing her relatives, and subverting all expectations of the maudlin, frumpy widow. The book was adapted for the screen under the name "Love and Friendship" in 2016 and stars Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny, Xavier Samuel and Stephen Fry. Another unfinished novel, "The Watsons" follows Emma Watson, the youngest daughter of a poor clergyman who was raised by a wealthy aunt. Returning home, she is bored by her husband-hunting sisters, but soon catches the eye of local gentleman, Lord Osbourne. There are few authors as iconic as Jane Austen (1775-1817). Her body of work contains some of the most beloved books and characters of all time which have been in print for over two hundred years and sold millions of copies worldwide.Austen was a trailblazer, famed for her satire, her astute social commentary and her strong-willed, passionate heroines. Her ability to wield humour with realism has found her favour with critics and readers for generations. Her most famous works include Pride and Prejudice (1813), Emma (1816), Sense and Sensibility (1811) and Persuasion (1818), all of which have received success in adaptations for the screen, stage and radio.

38.99 kr. ‘The Lay-Man's Sermon Upon the Late Storm’ is a thought-provoking political pamphlet written by Daniel Defoe. In this essay, Defoe discusses the Church of England’s reaction to the great storm of 1703 that killed over a thousand people in England. The Church claimed that those who died deserved it for their sins and Defoe smartly and satirically disputes this line of thought. In an original and witty manner, Defoe claims that 18th Century England would put moderates to death as extreme views were the norm. Defoe’s writings on religion and politics were controversial at the time and led to him being imprisoned but they also influenced many other politicians. This book remains relevant as it preaches centrism and peace in a fractured society. ‘The Lay-Man’s Sermon Upon the Late Storm’ should be read by anyone interested in politics and religion as it provides great insight into an interesting time in history.Daniel Defoe (1660 – 1731) is one of the most important authors in the English language. Defoe was one of the original English novelists and greatly helped to popularise the form. Defoe was highly prolific and is believed to have written over 300 works ranging from novels to political pamphlets. He was highly celebrated but also controversial as his writings influenced politicians but also led to Defoe being imprisoned. Defoe’s novels have been translated into many languages and are still read across the globe to this day. Some of his most famous books include ‘Moll Flanders’ and ‘Robinson Crusoe’ which was adapted into a movie starring Pierce Brosnan and Damian Lewis in 1997. Defoe’s influence on English novels cannot be understated and his legacy lives on to this day.

Ballantyne is an adventure story which follows young firefighter Joe Dashwood and his exploits with the London fire service during its earliest days. Joe and his colleagues face all sorts of problems and dangers as they dash around London attending calls for their urgent services. A fascinating story, and a delightful peek at an institution in its infancy.R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish artist and prolific author of mostly children’s fiction. Born in Edinburgh, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children. At the age of 16 Ballantyne moved to Canada, where he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company, travelling all over the country to trade for fur. He returned to Scotland in 1847 following the death of his father, and it was then that he began his literary career in earnest, writing over 100 children’s adventure books over the course of his life. Stories such as ‘The Coral Island’ and ‘The Young Fur Traders’ were hugely popular, and many of them drew on his own experiences of travelling throughout Canada. A stickler for detail, Ballantyne continued to travel widely to research the backgrounds and settings for his exciting stories. His tales became an inspiration for authors of the future, including ‘Treasure Island’ novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne spent the latter period of his life living in London and Italy for the sake of his health. He died in Rome in 1894 at the age of 68.

These short stories are more grounded than Wells’ later science-fiction work, but they portray the same values and ideals that influence his celebrated novels. This deeply personal collection gives the reader invaluable insight into Wells’ character and his views on topics from marriage to art. While these short conversations are intimate, Wells’ unique and witty prose ensures that they are always entertaining. The best exchanges include the lovelorn tale of ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ and ‘On Social Music’ in which the uncle comically complains about a neighbour playing the piano poorly. Drifting between playful and poignant ‘Select Conversations with an Uncle’ is the perfect read for fans of Wells or conversational literature such as Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Decay of Lying’.H. G. Wells (1866-1946) was a celebrated English writer, remembered mostly for his science fiction works. Often described as a futurist, H. G. A four-time Nobel Prize in Literature nominee, Wells explored a wide array of themes in his works, from religion to social criticism and beyond. Some of his best works include the time-travel novel ‘The Time Machine’, the sci-fi adventure novel ‘The Island of Dr. Moreau’, and the mankind-versus-aliens novel ‘The War of the Worlds’. The book was written by Wells due to the success and praise of his earlier political writings and it is the most insightful and comprehensive portrayal of the author’s socialist views. With a unique and balanced approach, Wells argues for a just and equitable society built on collectivism instead of individualism. However, the book is not simply reiterating Marx as Wells criticises armed revolution and praises constructive socialism. ‘New Worlds for Old’ was incredibly successful at the time of its release and was praised by authors and activists such as Joseph Conrad and Helen Keller. He is about to be kicked out of his cheap flat in east London and his sister has gone missing after an argument about what to do with the house where they grew up. Now that their mother is dead this is the last link they have to the declining town on the north-west coast where they grew up.Enter Emily Nardini, a cult author, who – after granting Paul a rare interview – receives him into her surprisingly grand home. 38.99 kr. It’s Christmas morning and Jack Frost and his sons Colonel Wind and Major Snow are causing havoc in the streets of London – their bitter winds and cold assaulting everyone they encounter. In the midst of this freezing wintry weather, siblings Tom and Matty decide to head out to bring Christmas cheer to one and all. A charming festive tale by children’s author R.M. Ballantyne.R.M.

59.99 kr. ‘Beyond the City’ is a short story by Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, first published in 1892. Set in the changing world of London during the latter stages of the 19th century, the story is a departure from Conan Doyle’s usual literary themes of mystery and adventure, and instead is a story of four families and their intertwining lives. Romance, wealth, women’s suffrage, and family all feature in this delightful short story from the popular author.Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British author, best known as the creator of the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, he was educated in England and Austria before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. It was during his time at university that Doyle began writing short stories, submitting them to magazines and journals. His first Sherlock Holmes novel, ‘A Study in Scarlet’ was written in just three weeks and published in 1887 to favourable reviews, and more Sherlock adventures followed. By 1893, Doyle was growing tired of Sherlock and attempted to kill him off in the story ‘The Final Problem’, but public outcry caused him to resurrect the famous detective. He featured in a total of 56 short stories and four novels along with his trusty sidekick Dr Watson and made Doyle one of the best-paid authors of the time. The stories have been adapted multiple times; most recently in the successful BBC series ‘Sherlock’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Later literary works included the Professor Challenger series which began with ‘The Lost World’, in which Challenger sets out to find evidence of prehistoric life. The book inspired numerous adaptations, including the films ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Lost World’. In later life Doyle became captivated by the world of spiritualism and the occult and published non-fiction works about his beliefs including ‘The Coming of the Fairies’. Arthur Conan Doyle died at home in 1930.
