April 1875 in Greenwich, einem Stadtteil Londons, als uneheliches Kind einer Schauspielerin geboren und wuchs bei Pflegeeltern auf. Er ging bereits früh von der Schule ab und nahm zunächst verschiedene Tätigkeiten an, bevor er sich gerade volljährig geworden für die Armee verpflichtete. Nach dem Militärdienst arbeitete Edgar Wallace als Journalist bei einer englischen Tageszeitung. Im Jahr 1905 veröffentlichte er als Autor sein erstes Werk. Insgesamt schrieb Edgar Wallace zu seinen Lebzeiten über 175 Bücher. Besonders bekannt wurde er für seine Kriminalromane, deren vielseitige Handlungen er in einem brisanten journalistischen Schreibstil verfasste.
