Målet med rejsen var at få indblik i landets rivende udvikling og de forandringer, der var undervejs med løsrivelsen fra Det Britiske Imperium. Ghana fik endelig status som en selvstændig stat i 1957. Værket er udgivet som et historisk dokument med samtidens sprogbrug og menneskeopfattelse.Karl Johannes Eskelund (1918-1972) var en dansk forfatter og journalist, der skrev en lang række reportager og bøger om sine rejser rundt om i verden. Han tilbragte en stor del af sit liv i Kina og giftede sig i 1939 med sin kinesiske kæreste Chi-Yun Fei. Sammen rejste de verden tynd, og Karl Eskelund reporterede blandt andet om deres oplevelser til New York Times. Hans talrige bøger er udkommet på både dansk og engelsk og har vundet stor succes verden over.

Sørensen er uddannet lærer, har været leder af Skærbæk museum og har gennem mange år drevet eget forlag.
