Fremmedlegionen var et perfekt sted for en mand, der ønsker at forsvinde, men det var også brutalt og nedslidende, og den unge Rosen begynder efterhånden at længes efter det liv og de mennesker, han i sin tid flygtede fra.Erwin Carlé (1876-1923) var en tysk forfatter og journalist, der udgav flere bøger under pseudonymet Erwin Rosen. Han levede et begivenhedsrigt liv som journalist i USA og Europa, var krigsreporter for den amerikanske hær ved slaget ved Signal Hill i Cuba i 1898 og blev senere som soldat i den franske Fremmedlegionen. Det skrev han siden om i sine erindringer.

Nogle drenges leg med en kludebold i en sidegade på Østerbro bliver begyndelsen til fodboldklubben Blindgadens Boldklub.Ved et uheld kommer en af drengene til at skyde bolden gennem ruden ind til ingeniør Mailand, der bliver kaldt Oregenalen.Fregne får af kammeraterne til at opgave at redde situationen, og gennem ham opstår der et ubrydeligt venskab mellem ingeniøren og drengene.Oregenalen lærer dem at bokse og spille kricket, men fremfor alt lærer han dem som deres fodboldtræner at spille så godt fodbold, at holdet bliver kendt af alle fodboldinteresserede."Kludebolden" er første bog i serien "Landsholdsspilleren". Bøgerne er fulde af sjov og spænding fra København omkring århundredeskiftet.Aage Hermann (1888-1949) var en dansk digter, forfatter, journalist og redaktør. Han stod bag en lang række digtsamlinger og sprang senere i livet ud som børnebogsforfatter, hvor han fik stor succes med bøgerne om stewardessen Benthe Boelmann, som må opklare forbrydelser eller afværge katastrofer på sine rejser rundt om i verden.

Thomas Burke var stort set ukendt som forfatter, da han udgav novellesamlingen "Knækkede liljer" (oprindeligt "Limehouse Nights") i år 1916, mens første verdenskrig hærgede i Europa, og værket regnes i dag for en klassiker. Det er personlige vignetter om nattelivet i den pulserende og brogede storby London – særligt det fattige men eventyrlige Limehouse-kvarter i East End. Her udspiller tilværelsen sig på alle tangenter. Lyssky forretning, gambling, opiumrygende mystikere, mord, forbudt kærlighed, farligt begær, fattigdom. Novellesamlingen vakte bekymring blandt konservative i samtiden, både fordi Burke romantiserer tilværelsen blandt outlaws, men nok især fordi han skriver om kærlighedsforhold mellem det engelske borgerskabs hvide kvinder og Limehouse-kvarterets kinesiske mænd.Den britiske forfatter Thomas Burke (1886-1945) levede i London hele sit liv og søgte som forfatter at fange byens flygtige energi. Det var særligt kinakvarteret i East End, det såkaldte Limehouse-distrikt, der fortryllede Burke og inspirerede ham til at fortælle. Hans bøger beretter om elendigheden i underklassen, om fattigdom, krig, mord, perversion og lyssky forretninger, men også om vrangsidens eksotiske og magiske skær. Der findes en dunkel poesi under røde lanterner, i de beskidte gyder, kulørt silke, opiumrus og forbudt begær, som Burke havde et særligt blik for og mesterligt omsatte til litteratur – digtsamlinger, essays, romaner og noveller.

’Skolelærerlitteratur’ kaldte man i begyndelsen af 1900-tallet, med et lidt nedladende udtryk, den del af det sene 1800-tals opbyggelige litteratur, der hovedsageligt var skrevet af lærere. Mads Jepsen mener dog, at kritikken ofte er for hård, og i denne lille bog giver han en præsentation af de tre folkelige forfattere Peder R. Møller, Jens Skytte og Zakarias Nielsen, og peger på nogle af de idéer, der var væsentlige for deres forfatterskaber.Mads Jepsen (1868-1916) var en dansk forfatter og redaktør, der skrev en lang række bøger og artikler. Mads Jepsen viste helt fra barnsben et stort talent for at skrive og modtog allerede som tiårig sit første honorar for en artikel. Han er i høj grad kendt for sine mange biografier om blandt andre Jeanne d’Arc, Peter Nansen og Oliver Cromwell. Mads Jepsen udgav også bøger under pseudonymerne Otto C. Lund og Jokum Jokumsen.
