Dopo aver studiato giornalismo all’Università del Michigan si trasferisce a Detroit, dove pubblica i primi racconti e inizia a lavorare come reporter. Nel 1907 ottiene dal governo canadese un incarico che gli cambierà la vita: viaggiare per l’estremo nord del paese e descriverne le bellezze attraverso un reportage, così da incoraggiare il turismo nella regione. Da questa esperienza, Curwood trarrà infinite suggestioni, che di lì a poco avrebbero ispirato ben ventotto romanzi, due raccolte di racconti e un saggio sui Grandi Laghi. È conosciuto, insieme a Jack London, come il più importante cantore del Grande Nord, descritto in romanzi delicati e ricolmi di amore per la natura, fra i quali si possono citare "I cacciatori d’oro" (1909), "Kazan" (1914) e, soprattutto, "The Grizzly King" (1916), ispiratore del film "L’orso" di Jean-Jacques Annaud (1988).

Una lettura obbligata, quindi, almeno per tutti coloro che desiderino capire qualcosa di più sulla controversa epopea della Frontiera.Pearl Zane Grey (1872-1939) nasce a Zanesville (Ohio), quarto figlio di un affermato dentista. Appassionato fin dall’infanzia di letteratura, pesca e baseball, inizia a scrivere i primi racconti a soli quindici anni. Grazie a una borsa di studio, ottenuta proprio col baseball, nel 1896 si laurea e si trasferisce a New York, dove per qualche anno esercita la professione dentistica di famiglia. Annoiato dalla routine, però, Zane comincia a scrivere febbrilmente, producendo una notevole quantità di romanzi, tutti ambientati nell’amato West. Sebbene inizialmente rifiutato da vari editori, nel 1910 ottiene finalmente un insperato successo, grazie al best-seller "L’eredità del deserto". È l’inizio di una carriera che lo renderà uno fra i romanzieri più amati dal grande pubblico statunitense (e non solo). Fra i suoi moltissimi titoli – da cui, tra l’altro, sono stati tratti ben 110 film e una serie televisiva – si possono citare "L’anima della frontiera" (1906), "Il ponte dell’arcobaleno" (1915), "Il vagabondo del deserto" (1923) e "Stirpe eroica" (1925).

"Il figlio", pubblicato da Arturo Colautti nel 1914, racconta il rapporto complesso, tormentato, fra Enea De Liberi – giovane capitano di marina ambizioso, che ha già girato il mondo in lungo e in largo, e il padre Paolo Emilio, vecchio artista lunatico e alcolizzato. Cedendo alle suggestioni freudiane, tanto in voga, all’epoca, il romanzo si sviluppa come un vero e proprio processo di disvelamento, esplicitando, via via, i misteri che si celano dietro alla figura oscura del vecchio. Un romanzo viscerale, carico di pathos e di tensione, che si chiuderà in un crescendo di dramma e follia.Arturo Colautti (1851-1914) nasce a Zara da una famiglia italo-francese. A soli diciassette anni inizia a svolgere attività giornalistiche, fondando ben due giornali (Il Progresso, La Leva). Dopo aver prestato servizio di leva nell’esercito austro-ungarico ed essersi laureato alle università di Vienna e Graz, dedica alcuni anni alla direzione di riviste a sfondo irredentista, optando poi per l’esilio volontario in Italia. Stabilitosi dapprima a Padova e poi a Milano, nel 1885 arriva a Napoli, dove assume la direzione del Corriere di Napoli e collabora con molte altre riviste. Considerato fra i più importanti esponenti dell’irredentismo dalmata, Arturo Colautti ha scritto opere molto apprezzate, fra cui "Il figlio" (1894), "Fidelia" (1896) e "Il terzo peccato" (1902).

Nata da una famiglia nobile, vive e studia tra Firenze e Milano. Nel 1880 esordisce nella narrativa, diventando una delle autrici più rinomate di fine secolo.

Romanzo autobiografico incentrato sull’ambiente letterario di Roma, "Gli egoisti" fu pubblicato postumo nel 1923 dal figlio dell’autore. Il protagonista, Dario, è il perfetto sfaccendato e inconcludente, che ha delle difficoltà a vivere: sperpera il patrimonio del padre, segue sogni di improbabile successo (vorrebbe fare il musicista), e passa le sue giornate tra inadeguatezza, piccolezza, disperazione, sensi di colpa, povertà ed egoismo. Un ritratto impietoso eppure incredibilmente umano e, forse proprio per questo, senza tempo.Federigo Tozzi (1883 – 1920) è stato un giornalista, drammaturgo, poeta e scrittore italiano. Rimasto sconosciuto per molto tempo, è solo negli ultimi anni che l’autore è diventato oggetto di un’attenzione sempre crescente, tanto da essere oggi considerato uno dei più importanti narratori italiani del Novecento. "Città della Vergine" fu la sua opera d’esordio, scritta in versi, mentre "Con gli occhi chiusi" è uno dei suoi romanzi più famosi.

Dumas était métis, sa grand-mère paternelle ayant été une esclave afro-américaine. De ce fait, il fut régulièrement victime de racisme. Son fils, Alexandre Dumas fils, fut aussi écrivain et est surtout connu pour son roman La Dame aux camélias. Dumas père, quant à lui, est entre autres l'auteur du Comte de Monte-Cristo et des Trois Mousquetaires.

Pubblicato nel 1928 come seguito del fortunatissimo "Forlorn River", "Nevada" vede nuovamente al centro della scena l’omonimo cowboy – il cui nome è in realtà Jim Lacy – che, dopo essere riuscito a salvarsi dalle peripezie del precedente romanzo, lavora adesso in incognito, fra le sanguinose bande di ladri di bestiame che infestano l’Arizona. Cresciuto in mezzo a violenze di ogni tipo, e con un’abilità notevole sia nel cavalcare che nell’usare corda e revolver, Nevada ha però un cuore puro e un senso profondissimo della giustizia. Appassionato fin dall’infanzia di letteratura, pesca e baseball, inizia a scrivere i primi racconti a soli quindici anni. Grazie a una borsa di studio, ottenuta proprio col baseball, nel 1896 si laurea e si trasferisce a New York, dove per qualche anno esercita la professione dentistica di famiglia. Annoiato dalla routine, però, Zane comincia a scrivere febbrilmente, producendo una notevole quantità di romanzi, tutti ambientati nell’amato West. Sebbene inizialmente rifiutato da vari editori, nel 1910 ottiene finalmente un insperato successo, grazie al best-seller "L’eredità del deserto". È l’inizio di una carriera che lo renderà uno fra i romanzieri più amati dal grande pubblico statunitense (e non solo). Pubblicato da Rizzoli nel 1939, "La fuggitiva" è uno dei romanzi più apprezzati di Milly Dandolo, reso ancora più celebre dalla realizzazione, a soli due anni dalla sua uscita, del fortunato film ad opera di Piero Ballerini. Incentrato sull’amicizia e su altri temi – assai delicati – come la separazione, l’abbandono e il ripudio, il libro prende le mosse da Marina, una bambina che, appena fuggita di casa, incontra Delfina, una giovane allontanata dalla famiglia e abbandonata sull’altare. Accolta in casa di Marina come istitutrice, ben presto Delfina attira le attenzioni del padre della bambina, l’ingegner Ravaldo, il quale vive un periodo di crisi con la compagna Wanda. Giocando con la repulsione borghese per qualsiasi scandalo, Milly Dandolo assembla così un romanzo che è sia una schietta celebrazione dell’amore, ma anche una stoccata contro il bieco moralismo imperante nell’Italia di allora.Emilia Dandolo, meglio nota come Milly (1895-1946) nasce a Milano da un’agiata famiglia di origini venete. Cresciuta fra Castelfranco Veneto e Padova, già nel 1909 – a soli quattordici anni – inizia a collaborare col Passerotto, supplemento del Giornalino della domenica. Sarà proprio Luigi Bertelli, il direttore della rivista, a intravederne precocemente il grande potenziale letterario. Col suo incoraggiamento (e con quello di Giuseppe Fanciulli), Milly dà alle stampe la prima raccolta di poesie (1913), dando poi inizio a una prolifica carriera di scrittrice per l’infanzia, traduttrice e autrice di romanzi per adulti. Oltre ad aver tradotto per la prima volta "Peter Pan nei giardini di Kensington", ha firmato libri di grande successo come, ad esempio, "Uccelli senza nido" (1926), "Terra in vista" (1942) e il mastodontico "Croce e delizia" (1944).

Pubblicato nel 1910, "Il retaggio del deserto" è il primo romanzo a sfondo western del grande Zane Grey, anche se limitarsi a questo dato sarebbe decisamente riduttivo. In questa struggente cronaca di un amore impossibile si ritrovano, in effetti, tutti gli elementi che hanno reso l’autore americano uno fra i più importanti interpreti dello spirito della Frontiera, fatto di paesaggi infiniti, conflitti violenti e un mondo naturale che dà e toglie, sempre con la stessa, apparente, indifferenza. De ondergang van Al-AndalusTot in de 15de eeuw was een groot deel van Spanje in handen van Arabische heersers. Al-Andalus was een grootse cultuur, waar acht eeuwen lang vreedzaam werd samengeleefd door moslims, joden en christenen. Louis Couperus, altijd geobsedeerd door het noodlot en het moment waarop het doek valt, zoomt in op de laatste Arabische vorst van Al-Andalus. ‘Hem zal de granaatappel vallen uit de hand en anderen zullen de vruchten plukken,’ is Aboe-Abdallah voorspeld. De profetie blokkeert hem, waardoor het gevaar van de christelijke legers nog eens zo groot wordt. Couperus schreef in een meeslepende, emotionele stijl. Zijn verzameld werk beslaat maar liefst vijftig boekdelen.

Louis Couperus in al zijn facetten en toonaarden.‘Proza, deel 2’ verzamelt een grote diversiteit aan teksten van de grote romanschrijver Couperus. Het boek bevat veel columns (de ‘Intieme impressies’, ‘Opmerkingen van geen waarde’) en fictie, veelal sprookjes en historische verhalen. Dat betekent dat we ons verplaatsen naar het Oude Rome en naar Perzië. We zitten mee aan de Ronde Tafel van Koning Arthur en nemen deel aan de Dionysische Feesten. Even later staan we weer met de voeten op de grond en horen we Haagse dames roddelen over een nieuwe kapper. En af en toe geeft de grote Couperus ook schrijfles, met stukken over ‘Hoe een roman wordt geschreven’, beeldspraak en spelling. De prijs voor het mensengeluk...‘Het vuur brandde voort’, een autobiografie, was de laatste publicatie van Henriette Roland Holst. Het is een zowel eerlijk als strijdbaar boek, waarin ze vertelt over haar depressies en anorexia, over haar politieke engagement voor de communistische partij en haar politieke geschriften (o.m. over Rosa Luxemburg, de bolsjewieken, Gandhi...), over literaire vriendschappen (o.m. met Herman Gorter en Willem Kloos) en veel meer. We maken kennis met een vrouw met sterke overtuigingen, die een religieus-socialistische stem vormde in de Nederlandse literatuur. Ze vond het leven zwaar, maar wel de moeite waard: ‘De prijs blijft klein voor het mensengeluk, al gaan duizendmaal duizend harten stuk.’Notarisdochter Henriette Goverdine Anna Roland Holst-van der Schalk (1869-1952) debuteerde in 1893 als dichter in het tijdschrift ‘De nieuwe gids’, met mystiek geïnspireerde, erg klassieke verzen. In 1897 werd ze lid van de Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij, wat haar werk vanaf dan een politieke lading gaf. Het mysticisme werd vermengd met ‘proletarische poëzie’ (in haar eigen woorden). Naast poëzie schreef ze ook toneel en politieke non-fictie. In 1949 kreeg ze de Prijs voor Kunsten en wetenschappen voor haar hele oeuvre.
