De lezer van de 21ste eeuw zal vooral de levendigheid van de personages opmerken. Jonkheer Van Sprankhuyzen, de ‘zedelijk ontaarde aristocraat’, vertegenwoordiger van een verdwijnende elite en een onnavolgbare oplichter. Mathilde van Hilbeeck, de intelligente maar in armoede vrouw, die vecht tegen de minachting van haar medemens. Juffrouw Serpensteyn, geboren in hetzelfde milieu als Mathilde, die de strijd heeft opgegeven en alleen nog maar uit is op wraak en andere mensen laten delen in haar ellende. È qui che Pio Paletti riceve lezioni di modernità da due giornalisti, un consigliere, un chirurgo, un critico e un pittore. Ma non manca anche la giovane serva d'osteria, Domenichina, dalla lingua schietta.Alberto Cantoni (1841 – 1904) è stato uno scrittore italiano. Le sue opere sono caratterizzata da una sorta di umorismo riflessivo, caratteristica apprezzata anche da Luigi Pirandello. I suoi scritti riportano tra le pagine la vita semplice, comune, il mondo dei contadini e i loro problemi. Scrisse diverse opere tra cui "Foglie al vento", "Un re umorista ", considerato il suo capolavoro, e "Pietro e Paola". "Miseria e nobiltà" è una famosa commedia italiana in tre atti scritta in napoletano da Eduardo Scarpetta nel 1887. Il giovane e nobile Eugenio è innamorato della bella Gemma, figlia di un cuoco arricchito. L’amore del ragazzo è però ostacolato dal padre, il quale non vuole che il figlio sposi Gemma per via delle sue umili origini. La situazione, tuttavia, comincerà a farsi sempre più ingarbugliata...Eduardo Scarpetta (1853 – 1925) è stato un commediografo e attore italiano. Fu il più importante autore del teatro napoletano tra la fine dell’800 e l’inizio del ‘900 creando il teatro dialettale moderno, ancora oggi in uso. Alcune delle sue commedie più conosciute furono creazioni originali del suo repertorio e tra tutte si ricorda "Miseria e nobiltà". La sua carriera di commediografo (molto lunga, si parla di quasi trent’anni) fu interrotta all’improvviso perché Gabriele D’Annunzio gli fece causa.
