Il primo di un trittico, nonché quello di maggior successo, rappresenta una testimonianza dell’ambiente aristocratico lombardo dell’epoca. Il questo romanzo la satira dell’autore ne sottolinea le mode e gli sprechi tipici di questa classe sociale.Felice Calvi (1822 – 1901) è stato uno studioso, storico e scrittore italiano. "Un castello nella campagna romana" è stato il suo romanzo d’esordio, pubblicato nel 1852, che però non ottenne successo. Ritornò sulla scena letteraria cinque anni dopo con "Una regina della moda", "Leonilda" e "Claudia" che riscossero un discreto successo grazie alla sua capacità di fare satira verso gli sprechi che caratterizzavano l’aristocrazia lombarda di quell’epoca. Scrisse anche diverse opere incentrate sulla storia milanese, a partire dal medioevo fino ad arrivare alla dominazione austriaca.

De jongeman heeft van de Kerk toestemming gekregen om boeken te lezen die op de Index staan, om de Kerk beter te kunnen verdedigen. Maar Heynsberg voelt zijn geloof wankelen. Bovendien kan hij niet loskomen van zijn jeugdliefde Hansje, die intussen is getrouwd met steenrijke godsdienstwaanzinnige. ‘De kapelaan van Liestermonde’ is een half-dramatisch, half-satirische roman. Willem Paap liet zich inspireren door de ‘Ideeën’ van zijn vriend Multatuli voor een intrige die geen heilig huisje overeind liet staan.Willem Paap (1856-1923) kwam uit een eenvoudig gezin en was een Nederlandse schrijver en advocaat. Hij was zijn hele leven geïnteresseerd in de Nederlandse letterkunde. Zo twijfelde Paap lange tijd of hij letterkunde zou studeren. Ook is hij één van de oprichters van het literair tijdschrift 'De Nieuwe Gids'. Zijn bekendste roman 'Vincent Haman' (1898) is een sleutelroman waarin de familie Haman Nederlandse schrijvers representeren. Paap was goed bevriend met Eduard Douwes Dekker, beter bekend als Multatuli. Na Multatuli's overlijden kwam zijn weduwe bij Paap in huis wonen, waar hij haar hielp met het publiceren van 'Brieven van Multatuli'. Paap schreef in totaal elf boeken tussen 1884 en 1910 en woonde hij op verschillende plekken in Nederland en Duitsland. Paap keerde in 1912 definitief terug naar Nederland.
