Tweede deel van Jan ten Brinks meesterlijke schetsen over het leven in Insulinde.‘Oost-Indische dames en heren’ is een bundel van schetsen over het leven van Nederlanders in de kolonie, in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw. Het boek was succesvol, maar ook een beetje een schandaal: de figuren zouden al te zeer naar de werkelijkheid zijn getekend. De lezer van de 21ste eeuw zal vooral de levendigheid van de personages opmerken. Jonkheer Van Sprankhuyzen, de ‘zedelijk ontaarde aristocraat’, vertegenwoordiger van een verdwijnende elite en een onnavolgbare oplichter. Mathilde van Hilbeeck, de intelligente maar in armoede vrouw, die vecht tegen de minachting van haar medemens. Juffrouw Serpensteyn, geboren in hetzelfde milieu als Mathilde, die de strijd heeft opgegeven en alleen nog maar uit is op wraak en andere mensen laten delen in haar ellende. In dit tweede deel brengt Ten Brink de personages, voordien afzonderlijk geschetst, onder in één verhaal, dat met een tv-serie-achtige zwier naar een grandioze finale toe beweegt.Jan ten Brink (1834-1901) was letterkundige, theoloog, hoogleraar en schrijver. In de laatste decennia van de 19de eeuw had hij een vooraanstaande positie in de literatuur: hij hield causerieën, was redacteur van literaire bladen, publiceerde feuilletons over literatuur in De Telegraaf. Hij gaf les aan o.a. Marcellus Emants en Louis Couperus, die via hem beïnvloed werden door Zola en diens opvattingen over het naturalisme. "Racconti" è una raccolta di favole friulane scritte da Caterina Percoto, che si fece raccoglitrice della narrativa popolare e della tradizione del Friuli. Tra le righe emerge l’intima malinconia del popolo friulano e il senso della vita, che al tempo era piuttosto dura. Sono racconti emersi dalle lunghe chiacchierate che la Percoto intratteneva con i contadini, durante le veglie invernali nelle stalle, e che con la sua intelligenza, fermezza e passione è riuscita a mettere per iscritto la testimonianza di una generazione ormai quasi dimenticata.Caterina Marianna Percoto (1812 – 1887) è stata una poetessa e scrittrice italiana. La carriera letteraria iniziò nel 1839 e nelle sue opere spesso si ritrova la povertà del Friuli. Nel 1848, con la Prima guerra di indipendenza, i suoi scritti assunsero una connotazione più politica. Nello stesso periodo scrisse anche dei racconti ("La donna di Osoppo" e "La coltrice nuziale") che ebbero particolare successo. Negli anni cinquanta cominciò a scrivere in friulano; diventò raccoglitrice della narrativa popolare e della tradizione e nel 1863 pubblicò "Racconti", una raccolta di favole friulane.

I quattro racconti inclusi nella raccolta "L’infedele" – pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1897 – rappresentano l’ennesima dimostrazione di quanto Matilde Serao, oltre che scrittrice prolifica, sia stata anche un’autrice di rara sensibilità. Provando a sviscerare un tema inflazionato come quello dell’amore, infatti, riesce a sviluppare quattro storie di intensità straordinaria, che fanno luce su alcuni aspetti meno scontati del sentimento più antico fra tutti: l’amore come adulterio, l’amore come attesa ricca di aspettative, l’amore come ricordo di una felicità passata... Sullo sfondo di una società aristocratica ed alto-borghese da decadente Belle Époque, l’amore viene così sottoposto ad uno studio scrupolosissimo, che ne rivelerà l’indiscusso fascino ma anche l’inconfessabile valore illusorio. Un libro intenso, che non potrà che rimanere impresso nella memoria (e nel cuore) di chi lo leggerà...Matilde Serao (1856-1927) nasce a Patrasso ma cresce a Napoli, dove manifesta un precoce interesse per la letteratura. Nel 1882 si trasferisce a Roma, iniziando a collaborare come cronista al "Capitan Fracassa" e conoscendo il futuro marito Edoardo Scarfoglio. Sarà con lui, quindi, che coronerà l’ambizione di dirigere un giornale. Nel corso della loro lunga relazione – da cui nasceranno quattro figli – i coniugi fonderanno vari quotidiani, il maggiore dei quali sarà Il Mattino (1892). Dopo una burrascosa separazione, Matilde crea un proprio giornale, Il Giorno (1903), e dà vita ad un nuovo sodalizio, sentimentale e professionale, col giornalista Giuseppe Natale. Matilde Serao è stata, oltre che importantissima giornalista, anche scrittrice prolifica, pubblicando vari romanzi e raccolte di racconti. Muore nel 1927, poco dopo che Mussolini in persona ne bloccò la candidatura al Premio Nobel per la Letteratura.

"E questo è il mondo nuovo a cui tu, artista dei quarant’anni, sei pervenuto dal tuo secolo di calma e di fierezza, la nuova scena che ti accoglie". Così si dice il protagonista di "Sinfonia alpestre" – racconto lungo, già pubblicato da Linati in Svizzera nel 1932 – un musicista che ha visto tramontare le proprie ambizioni con la Prima Guerra Mondiale. La presente edizione dell’opera, che raccoglie gli altri racconti "Gentiluomo contadino" e "Bellezza e amore", potrebbe prendere in buona parte le mosse da questa frase. È infatti "Sinfonia alpestre" a dare il la (per restare in tema) a tutte le storie qui raccolte: in un mondo orfano di sé stesso, popolato da artisti, creativi, sfaccendati, è il Sublime a fare da contraltare alle miserie della vita. Che si tratti di quello che si riflette nell’opera d’ingegno umano, nell’arte, oppure nella sconvolgente bellezza della Natura...Carlo Linati (1878-1949) nasce a Como da una famiglia originaria di Gravedona. Laureatosi in legge all’Università di Parma (1906), esercita brevemente la professione di avvocato a Milano. In quegli stessi anni inizia ad ottenere un certo successo anche come scrittore, dapprima con la stesura di racconti e romanzi allegorici, poi, soprattutto, con i suoi celebri resoconti di viaggio: collaborando col Touring Club Italiano, Linati girerà infatti l’Europa con i più svariati mezzi, pubblicando vari reportage sulle principali testate italiane. Estremamente legato alla sua terra – celebrata in romanzi come, ad esempio, "Cantalupa" – Linati si distingue anche come brillante traduttore di James Joyce, con cui intrattenne un lungo rapporto di amicizia.

Honum er falið að leysa hin erfiðustu glæpamál víðsvegar um heiminn, enda þykir hann manna færastur til þeirra verka. Höfundur bókanna er óþekktur.

Una raccolta di novelle del 1935 in cui l’autrice, Maria Freschi Borgese, racconta di donne italiane durante l’epoca fascista. Sono donne che sopportano solitudine, preconcetti, frustrazioni e matrimoni infelici; sono donne che vivono nell’ombra di piccoli uomini e pregiudizi virili di un’epoca. Sono donne schiacciate, ma mai annichilite, che a testa alta riflettono la resistenza. Sullo sfondo si può udire l’abbaio di due cani litigiosi, anch’essi di estrazione sociale diversa, che vivranno una sventura canina comune.Maria Freschi Borgese, conosciuta anche con lo pseudonimo Erinni (1881 – 1947), è stata una scrittrice e poetessa italiana. Lo stile narrativo è discorsivo e gli intrecci da lei utilizzati sono vicini ai modelli dannunziani. Tra le opere più conosciute troviamo volumi di ricostruzione storico-letteraria come "La contessa Lara. Una vita di passione e di poesia nell’Ottocento italiano" e "L’appassionata di Byron". Fu a lungo redattrice della rivista "Occidente".

"Documenti umani" è una raccolta di racconti pubblicata nel 1888. Lo scopo, come si può evincere dal titolo, è raccogliere una serie di documenti sulla psicologia dell'uomo. L'animo umano, si sa, nasconde tantissime sfaccettature e Federico De Roberto riesce a descriverle in modo raffinato e moderno. L'opera rappresenta anche uno spaccato della società di fine Ottocento, sottolineando le debolezze di un'intera generazione. La gelosia che rende pazzi, lettere equivoche, duelli d'onore verranno raccontati a volte con l'utilizzo di dialoghi incalzanti, altre volte con monologhi melodrammatici. L'importante è non perdere di vista l'umanità che ci spinge ad agire e, semplicemente, a essere.Federico De Roberto (1861 - 1927) è stato uno scrittore italiano. Dopo un piccolo volume di poesie ("Encelado") pubblicato nel 1887, scrisse raccolte di novelle con un tratto verghiano, anche se non mancano scelte più personali. Sono poi seguiti romanzi di analisi psicologica ("Ermanno Raeli"; "L'illusione", primo volume del ciclo narrativo della famiglia Uzeda). Scrisse anche due monografie (una su Leopardi e una su Verga), tre epistolari, tre opere teatrali e tantissimi altri scritti appartenenti a generi molto diversi.

"Il diavolo e l'abisso" è uno straordinario e appassionante racconto lungo, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1895 sul numero natalizio del settimanale The Graphic. Il racconto narra dell'avventura finale di un grande piroscafo adoperato per missioni piuttosto dubbie, che cambia continuamente nome. Un giorno, infatti, camuffato da baleniera e battente bandiera britannica, viene intercettato e, infine, braccato da una cannoniera nei mari dell'Indonesia, dove di balene, per l'appunto, non se ne sono mai viste. Ne seguono scontri, vicende giudiziarie, e la fuga dei pirati che nascondevano all'interno della nave un prezioso carico.

"La mia domenica in patria" è uno dei quattro racconti appartenenti alla raccolta "Il diavolo e l’abisso", dove emerge uno dei lati meno conosciuti e, tuttavia, estremamente originali di Rudyard Kipling, autore noto soprattutto per "Il libro della giungla".In questo insolito racconto è lo stesso autore a narrare ai lettori la storia in prima persona. Tutto ha inizio da un viaggio in treno in compagnia di un medico, figura singolare che innescherà una catena di eventi fatta di errori, sviste ed equivoci che la penna dell'autore ha voluto fissare nel tempo.Per lungo tempo quest’opera è stata introvabile in Italia: questa è l’occasione giusta per non lasciarsela scappare!

Quattro racconti – introvabili da tempo in Italia e mai raccolti insieme – caratterizzati da un preciso senso dell’avventura e da un graffiante umorismo venato di aspetti satirici. Uno dei lati meno noti e tuttavia originalissimi dell’autore di "Kim", "Il libro della giungla", "Capitani coraggiosi" e "L’uomo che volle farsi Re". A "Il diavolo e l'abisso", primo straordinario e travolgente racconto lungo, in una nuova traduzione, se ne aggiungono altri tre: "La nave che trovò se stessa", "La mia domenica in patria" e "Pane nell’acqua", dai quali emerge la sapienza narrativa di un autore che per lungo tempo è stato celebre e amato quanto Dickens e Conrad.

La protagonista di questa racconto dalle tinte futuristiche è una nave mercantile di nome Dimbula, perno di un insolito racconto che ha al suo centro le tematiche della tecnologia e del progresso scientifico. All'interno del racconto, Kipling si diverte a dar voce al ponte, ai chiodi, ai bagli, agli argani, in un gioco di dialoghi surreali che alla fine daranno vita a una voce sola: quella della nave Dimbula che troverà se stessa nel suo primo viaggio da Liverpool a New York.

Þórðar Saga Geirmundarsonar gerir sig út fyrir að vera skrifuð upp eftir gömlum handritum, en er í raun skoplegur spegill á samtímann í líki fornsagna. Báðar eiga þær það sameiginlegt að vera ádeila á samtímamenn höfundar, með góðum skammti af húmor og skrifaðar í stíl fornsagna, eins og höfundi var einum lagið.Benedikt Sveinbjarnarson Gröndal (1826-1907) fæddist að Bessastöðum á Álftanesi. Þó hann hafi verið einn tíu systkina fékk hann góða menntun og fór til Kaupmannahafnar í nám þegar hann hafði aldur til. Hann lauk ekki námi og sneri aftur til Reykjavíkur, en endaði með að fara aftur í nám til Kaupmannahafnar sjö árum síðar. Þar kynntist hann skrautlegu fólki og endaði með að ferðast til Belgíu og taka kaþólska trú. Eftir það lauk hann loks prófi í norrænum fræðum við Kaupmannahafnarháskóla, en hann var fyrstur Íslendinga til þess.
