Pubblicata nel 1883, "Senz’amore" è una raccolta di racconti dallo stile asciutto ma sempre brillante, come tipico di Maria Antonietta Torriani alias Marchesa Colombi. Considerato dalla stessa autrice come parte di un dittico, teso ad approfondire il sentimento più umano al mondo, il presente volume si propone di illustrare quanto la vita sappia essere triste senza di esso. Per anni scriverà sul Corriere della Sera, fondato proprio da suo marito. Con i suoi maggiori romanzi, fra cui si possono citare "La vita in famiglia" (1881) e "Cara speranza" (1888), la "Marchesa Colombi" – pseudonimo tratto da una commedia di Paolo Ferrari – ha ottenuto un grande successo di pubblico, venendo riscoperta anche dalla critica con la riedizione di "Un matrimonio di provincia", curata nel 1973 da Natalia Ginzburg e Italo Calvino.

Dato alle stampe nel 1880, "La cartella N. 4" raccoglie una serie di brevi scritti, caratterizzati da un forte lirismo, che la Marchesa Colombi scrisse nell’arco dell’anno precedente. Come illustrato vivacemente dalla stessa autrice nel testo introduttivo – "Capo d’anno" – il titolo fa riferimento alla sua abitudine di raccogliere i propri racconti da pubblicare in cartelle annuali, utili anche a poter presentare puntualmente a un editore quanto basta per guadagnare i soldi necessari a fare i regali di Natale. Con lo stile che gli è più consono, Ulisse Barbieri ci mostra quanto futile sia la civiltà umana, e al contempo quanto il Mondo sia prezioso, in tutta la sua infinita meraviglia...Ulisse Barbieri (1842-1899) nasce a Mantova da una famiglia borghese. Attivo fin da giovanissimo nelle lotte antiaustriache, a sedici anni viene arrestato e condannato a quattro anni di carcere. Successivamente si arruola volontario fra i Cacciatori delle Alpi, agli ordini di Garibaldi, e combatte varie battaglie (1866). Trasferitosi a San Benedetto Po, inizia a svolgere una frenetica attività letteraria, avvicinandosi intanto al socialismo e all’anarchismo. Proprio per sfuggire a un nuovo arresto, emigrerà per qualche anno in Brasile, facendo infine ritorno a San Benedetto Po tre anni prima della morte. È stato autore di poesie, romanzi, drammi, libretti d’opera e commedie, ma è noto soprattutto per le opere "Lucifero: fantasia romantica" (1871) e "In basso" (1885).
