19-årige Niels får feriejob på institutionen Ebberødgård. Her skal han hjælpe med at passe de udviklingshæmmede beboere, men han opdager hurtigt, hvor psykisk hårdt, sådan et job kan være.
På Ebberødgård forelsker Niels sig i den ældre nattevagt Brit, og han fornemmer snart, at også hun har brug for hans hjælp.
Eiler Jensen (f. 1946) er uddannet Cand.pæd. i pædagogisk filosofi og forfatter til flere børne- og ungdomsbøger samt undervisningsmaterialer til danskfaget i folkeskolen.
