I doktordisputatsen "Madeiras vegetation" påviser Martin Vahl de temperaturbestemte grænser for atlanterhavsøens vigtigste plantesamfund og beskriver blandt andet samspillet mellem planteforhold, klima og jordbundsforhold.
Martin Vahl (1869-1946) var en dansk geograf og botaniker. Han var professor i geografi ved Københavns universitet fra 1921-1940, og han er i dag især kendt for sine undersøgelser af forbindelsen mellem klima og plantevækst.
