Mattis mor er syg. Uhelbredeligt syg. Og Matti vil gøre alt for at redde hende. Han får kontakt med dr. Green, som har opfundet en helt ny medicin: sort serum. Mattis mor får det bedre, men da lægen pludselig forsvinder, begynder der at ske grusomme ting. Da går det op for Matti, at det sorte serum har haft alvorlige bivirkninger. Bivirkninger, der er værre end hans vildeste mareridt.
