Kun Anna joutuu lähtemään kesäksi maalle äidin ja tämän miesystävän kanssa, hän on enemmän kuin harmissaan. Mitä kesästä oikein tulee, kun kaikki ystävät jäävät Turkuun? Maaseutu pääsee kuitenkin yllättämään. Anna saa uusia kivoja ystäviä. Anna tutustuu myös takkuiseen villiintyneeseen koiraan. Se on jäänyt asumaan entisen kotitalonsa pihaan omistajansa kuoleman jälkeen. Muiden ihmisten mielestä koira on pelottava. Annan ja koiran ystävyys syvenee päivä päivältä. Mutta onko ystävyydellä tulevaisuutta kesän jälkeen?
Kirjailija Virpi Saarinen (s. 1958) on julkaissut erityisesti lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuutta. Hänen teoksensa Hämäränkoira pääsi myös Finlandia Junior -ehdokkaaksi vuonna 2006.
