Description of The Battle of Life
"We count by changes and events within us. Not by years." Set in a small village, which stands on the site of a historic skirmish, "The Battle of Life" follows the romantic trials and tribulations of two sisters, Grace and Marion. All the while, they are harangued by their father, Dr Jeddler, who seems to treat life as a joke. With love triangles, false elopements and noble sacrifices, this novella explores the idea that each person must face their own, personal battle and decide whether to resolve it with or without incurring casualties. Despite the themes, this love story is peppered with humour and optimism.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. He is the author of 15 novels, five novellas, and hundreds of short stories. Among his most famous works are 'Oliver Twist' (1839), 'A Christmas Carol' (1843), and 'Great Expectations' (1861). Several of his books have been adapted for film, with characters such as Jacob Marley in 'A Christmas Carol' played by Alec Guinness.
